What is the cost for a Select Team to Register?

The registration fee is $800 per team.
Only six players required to form a team. Fee and initial
Select Team Roster and consent forms are due by November 2nd.
Teams have until December 3rd to add additional players.
Other Select Team fees:
• Add player after November 26th: $20
• Add player after the 8th player: $100 (plus late fee if after November 26th)
• Drop (remove) player from a roster: $20

What do the fees include?

The fee covers numerous expenses. These include a reversible uniform jersey, an 8x10 team photo, gym rental, referees, insurance, equipment needed to conduct games (first aid kits, basketballs, special “drop-down” goals for younger children, custom scoresheets), awards, a commemorative t-shirt for every player, coach certifications, administration, and supplies.

Can a select player receive a scholarship?

Scholarships are awarded on a first-come first-serve basis. That being said if the following conditions are satisfied, a select player can request to be reimbursed the effective amount of the scholarship.

  1. After completing team registration, the head coach must submit the team's roster with scholarship player's name listed.
  2. The scholarship player with a parent MUST go to on-site registration on October 28th (or November 4th only if league "makes").
    • If MCBBA has scholarships remaining, they must submit scholarship request form AND present a letter from student's district for free or reduced lunch.
    • If they have not done so, they must submit select player consent form.
  3. If the select league "makes", scholarships are sent as reimbursements in mail late November.

Where and When Do We Practice?

Select Teams may only schedule practices AFTER completing team registration.

Practices are held at one of the HEB ISD elementary schools. Each team has two practices a week, typically 6:30-7:45pm (for Junior league teams)
or 7:45-9:00pm (for Major and Senior league teams). Usually, a team shares a gym with another team (half court for each). If a coach selects a Wednesday practice day, typically teams have the full court to themselves.

We do not practice on Weekends.

When possible/practical, practice days, times and sites are assigned based on coach preference, first come, first served. Assignments are confirmed and “contracts” between the school principal and the coach are distributed at the time of team formation.

Practice begins on or after December 5, 2016. If the schools are closed for a holiday (e.g., MLK Holiday, January 19), or a gym is closed for a school event, your coach may try to reschedule practice to some other night or location. We do not practice the week of our post-season tournament.

Where and When Do We Play Games?

We plan to use both gyms at four HEB ISD junior high schools. Our season begins Saturday, January 7, 2017. At the start of season (first six games), the first games are scheduled to start around 12:30 PM and last games may conclude as late as 10:00 PM. Later in the season, we start games around 9:30 AM.

For our post-season tournament, games sites are the same however sometimes add another HEB ISD junior high or high school. We expect to start with games on Sunday afternoon, February 28th, play throughout the week at night, and then conclude on Saturday, March 5, with games all day long. Most leagues play “double elimination” with each team surviving until they lose two games. There is no “what if” game should a previously undefeated team lose its first game in the final.

Each league has an awards ceremony following its championship game and every registered player is encouraged to attend.

How Are Select Teams Formed?

A select team must have a head coach at the time of team registration. A select team is recommended to have 8 players; however, they may have few as 6 players. Select teams have no maximum number of players.

For Senior League (7th/8th grades), any player (8th grade or below) the may be listed on team roster.

For Junior (3rd/4th grades) and Major (5th/6th grades) Leagues, a select player MUST qualify as one of the following.

  1. The child of the select team's head coach.
  2. If the player played the immediate previous season in MCBBA draw league, the select team's head or assistant coach must have been either the player's head or assistant coach in the prior season.
  3. He/she did not play in MCBBA in the prior season.
  4. If a player does not qualify above, he/she are encouraged to consider individual registration in a draw league.

Select Team League needs at least 4 teams to be viable. If insufficient teams register, the league does not make and team registration fee is refunded.
If a Select League makes on November 2nd, no refunds are possible.

Is Select League Competitive?

Short answer is Maybe. We cannot predict the composition of the teams that choose to register. That being said, it's likely that most if not all players are likely to have playing experience. Consequently, Select Leagues are likely to be more competitive than Draw League.

Regardless of the competition, coaches, parents, and players should consider winning of games as secondary. All can easily agree there are more important things than just winning. The prime emphasis should remain the molding of future high character citizens.

How are Coaches Screened?

Every coach (head and assistant), each officer, director and commissioner submits an application and we conduct an annual criminal background check. We have a Screening Committee that passes on the qualifications of all of our coaches. Every coach attends a 3-4 hour training session and is “certified” in basketball (the fee is paid by MCBBA) with the National Youth Sports Coaches Association.

Only players and approved coaches (no more than two coaches) may occupy the bench during games.

Prospective coaches should review our Background Check Policy.

What Conduct Is Expected?

We expect children to behave themselves! We expect parents to supervise their children. We expect all fans to conduct themselves properly. Parental signature on the Player Registration Form confirms the parent’s intent to support acceptable behavior of players, player’s families and parents.

Your coach signs a contract with the HEB ISD agreeing there shall be no food, no drinks, no gum, no siblings (brothers and sisters) and no friends in the school’s gym during practice. Parents are welcome. Only registered players and coaches may be on the gym floor, before, during and after practice.

On game day, LEAVE YOUR BASKETBALLS AT HOME! For your safety and for the protection of school property, no person may be in possession of a basketball inside a school we use on game day, at any time or in any place, except during authorized activity on the gym floor.

Harassment of officials by coaches, assistant coaches, players or parents is not tolerated. Game officials – referees and commissioners – are authorized to instruct unruly persons to leave the building, if necessary.

Just as you expect your coach to be on time for games and practices, your coach and teammates expect dependability from players.

What Size Basketball? How High the Goal?

The basketball is the 28.5” ball for all leagues EXCEPT for BOYS 7th and 8th grades, which use slightly larger 29½” ball.

League Grades Goal
Height
Free Throw
Distance
Junior 3rd and 4th 8’-6” 13’-6”
Major 5th and 6th 10’-0” 15’-0”
Senior 7th and 8th 10’-0” 15’-0”

What are steps and important dates for Select Teams before the first game?

  1. Once a coach is reasonably sure he/she has 6 or more players that "qualify" to be a select team, complete team registration either on-site or on-line.
  2. Submit your Select Team Roster. (preferable with at least 6 players listed). Deadline to submit roster with at least 6 players AND their corresponding consent forms is November 2nd.
  3. See practice scheduling to make your practice request. Be aware requests are filled on "first come, first served" basis. So sooner is better.
  4. For each player on your roster, their parents must either submit select player consent form or complete on-line. The player may also go to on-site registration to try on sample jersey sizes and submit parent consent form. Be sure they and their parents KNOW they are submitting a select player consent form and NOT completing individual registration. Also, be sure they know their correct league AND team name. The head coach and/or team manager are responsible to make sure parents complete. Players are not official may not participate until consent is completed. If 6 of your players do not complete by Nov. 2nd, it could mean then entire league does not make.
  5. If a select player qualifies for a scholarship reimbursement, be sure team roster includes the player's name. See scholarships above for more details. If a player is awarded a scholarship, the player may not be removed from the roster for the season.
  6. On November 18th, the Coach must submit team uniform request with team's jersey colors and each player's jersey number.
  7. November 28th is last day to add a player to roster without paying $20 fee.
  8. On or about November 22nd, the head coach will be emailed their practice agreement with HEB ISD. The head coach MUST go to school office at their practice location to submit their signed practice agreement. Some schools might ask you to meet with P.E. instructor.
Deadline is December 1st but do not wait till then.
  9. If coaches (head or assistants) are not certified by NYSCA, attend either the certification clinic. Location and times are to be determined.
  10. December 3rd is last day to add players to roster and submit their parent consent form.
  11. The week of December 4th, start practices.
  12. On December 30th, mandatory coach's meeting is scheduled. Also, team jerseys will be passed out.
  13. On or about January 1st, game schedules will be published on website.
